ROXBURY – Alphonso E. “Fonso” Hodgkins, 81, died Friday, Dec. 15, at the Rumford Hospital after a brief illness. He was a resident of Roxbury.

He was born in Roxbury, on Sept. 20, 1925, a son of the late Alphonso G. and Valeda (Thibodeau) Hodgkins. He attended Roxbury schools. He served as a Coxswain in the U.S. Navy during World War II from 1944 to 1946, including overseas in the Asiatic Pacific area. He owned and operated Hodgkins Body Shop in Roxbury. He enjoyed oil painting, rug braiding, antiquing and bottle collecting.

He was married in Rumford, on June 25, 1949, to Doris LeBlanc who survives of Roxbury.

Other survivors include a daughter, Karen Hodgkins of Roxbury; four brothers, Ronald of Roxbury, Robert, and his wife, Hazel, of Roxbury, Gilbert of Roxbury and Gary, and his wife, Gay, of Minot; sisters, Arline Baldwin of South Paris, Irene Leighton of Rumford, Rosamay Marston of Roxbury, Annette Perry, and her husband, Ernest, of Tucson, Ariz., Leona White of Rumford, Lorraine Touchette, and her husband, James, of Roxbury and Phyllis Harlow, and her husband, Tommy, of Roxbury; and his dog, “Buddy.”

He was predeceased by a son, David; and two brothers, Albert and Roger Hodgkins.
