PORTLAND (AP) – Tim Brent netted the game-winner, Drew Miller set up two key goals and Nathan Marsters made 24 saves as the Portland Pirates beat the Manchester Monarchs 3-1 Friday in the American Hockey League.

After a scoreless first period, the Monarchs (12-9-5-1) took the lead when Konstantin Pushkarev scored his third goal of the season 8:09 into the second.

Pierre Parenteau tied it 1-1 on the power play with 6:41 remaining in the period.

Skating short-handed, Brent took a cross-ice pass from Miller to beat Manchester goalie Jason LaBarbera 54 seconds into the third period.

Portland (15-8-1-2) made it 3-1 when Ryan Carter scored at 15:18 of the third.

Marsters was outstanding in net, making key saves in all three periods. His best effort was stopping Patrick O’Sullivan’s point-blank breakaway attempt at 12:56 of the first.
