SCARBOROUGH (AP) – A 67-year-old volunteer traffic control officer died Friday after after being struck by a car while directing traffic around the scene of an accident. James Durant of Scarborough was transported to Maine Medical Center following the Thursday night accident on Route 114. Hospital officials said he died the next day.

Police said Elizabeth Coughlin, 54, was making a left turn from Running Hill Road onto Route 114 when she struck Durant. No charges have been filed. Durant was directing traffic following an accident just north of that intersection in which a car hit a house. No serious injuries were reported in that crash.
