Shooter: Cody Rioux, 15, Norridgewock

Victim: Joshua Sawyer, 15, Pittsfield

Incident location: Norridgewock

Outcome: Rioux pleaded guilty to manslaughter on Oct. 25, 2006; sentenced to 225 hours of community service, which includes speaking about his experience at 10 hunter safety courses to promote firearm safety. His father, Scott Rioux, 34, also of Norridgewock, pleaded no contest in September 2006 to three counts of endangering the welfare of a child and one count of hunting on Sunday because he provided the boys with the ammunition they were using. He was sentenced to 50 hours of community service, part of which will also be served by speaking at hunter safety courses.

2004

Shooter: Adam B. Nason, 20, Newport

Victim: James Griffin Jr., 21, Levant

Incident location: Levant

Outcome: Griffin was hunting shortly after dusk and pleaded not guilty on Jan. 29, 2005. He changed his plea to guilty of manslaughter on June 14, 2005, and was sentenced to five years in prison with all but 30 days suspended. Victim was wearing blaze orange clothing.

2001

Shooter: James R. Newcomb, 35, Livermore

Victim: David L. Noyes, 42, Canton

Incident location: Canton

Outcome: On Aug. 25, 2003, Newcomb pled guilty to reckless conduct with a dangerous weapon, a Class C felony. He could have received a maximum penalty of five years in prison and a $5,000 fine. But Justice Thomas E. Delahanty II, noting that Newcomb had voluntarily helped David Noyes’ family financially, sentenced him to two years probation and 100 hours of community service. As a convicted felon, Newcomb can never again legally hunt with a firearm.

Incident location: T5 R18 WELS (unorganized territory, Somerset County)

Outcome: Gardner acquitted of manslaughter; lost license for five years. The victim was the son of Garner’s best friend.

Incident location: Hermon

Outcome: The victim was hanging up clothes in her backyard and was not wearing blaze orange. Rogerson was acquitted of manslaughter.

1987

Outcome: Jandreau was convicted of manslaughter; sentenced to three years, all but four months suspended, plus 200 hours community service. He lost his license for five years. Victim was wearing a dungaree jacket and blue cap.

Shooter: Dennis Allen Reynolds, 26, Elkton, Md.

Victim: Thomas C. Bachman, 26, Wilmington, Mass.

Incident location: Pleasant Ridge Plantation, Somerset County

Outcome: Reynolds was acquitted of manslaughter. Victim had blaze orange vest and hat, but they were on the ground beside him.

Victim: Harvey Smith III, 31, New Ipswich, N.H.

Incident location: Roques Bluffs

Outcome: Preston was convicted of manslaughter and criminal negligence with a firearm by a convicted felon. Sentenced to 2 years in jail; served 17 months. He lost his license for five years. The victim was bending over to move a log out of the woods in the road in front of his vehicle when he was shot.

1986

Incident location: Brownville

Outcome: Shooting ruled an accidental discharge; convicted of holding loaded gun unsafely with no adults present. The victim was wearing a blaze orange vest.

Victim: Geoffrey Durgin, 24, Sherman Mills

Incident location: Sherman

Outcome: Cox was charged with juvenile manslaughter, but dismissed in plea bargain. He was sentenced to public service and lost his license for five years. The victim was wearing a red and black checked coat; his fluorescent hat was not on.
