BIDDEFORD – Clifford A. Sawyer, 87, a resident of Gables Way, Old Orchard Beach, formerly of Marcello Street in Jay, died late Saturday night, Dec. 16, at Southern Maine Medical Center, where he had been a patient.
He was born May 29, 1919, in Harrison, the son of Walter and Marcia (Gilford) Sawyer.
He was a graduate of Bridgton High School.
He served as a sergeant in the U.S. Army Air Corps in the Pacific theater of World War II, in New Guinea, Bismark-Archipelago, Northern Solomons, Philippine Liberation, Papuan East India and Lae and Salamaua.
On June 7, 1945, he married Anna Scappaticci of Jay.
He worked as a carpenter and a plumber part time and was a millwright for International Paper Company at the Otis Mill in Jay for 26 years, retiring in 1979. He enjoyed gardening and doing crafts. He was a communicant of St. Rose of Lima Church, past treasurer of the Sons of Italy, Quarter Century Club, member of International Paper Company, lifetime member of the Frank L. Mitchell V.F.W. Post 3335, member of the Lane-Dube AmVets Post No. 33, and the George Bunton American Legion Post No. 10.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Anna, of Old Orchard Beach; his sons, Richard Sawyer and wife, Cornelia, of Saco, and Col. Walter Sawyer and wife, Nancy, of Alexandria, Va.; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by a son, David Sawyer; a brother, Everett Sawyer; and two sisters, Erma Nason and Isabelle Chapman.
