LEWISTON – The Lewiston/Auburn Alliance for the Homeless will hold a candlelight vigil from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 21, at Veterans Memorial Park on Main Street
The vigil is part of the nationwide observance of National Homeless Memorial Day, held annually on the winter solstice by homeless advocates around the nation.
The Lewiston/Auburn Alliance for the Homeless – a group of local service providers, volunteers and city representatives – has identified the need for an adult day center/service center for the homeless and has been working toward that goal.
The group advocates for more housing options for people with no or low income, combined with a safe place for the homeless during the day. With the assistance of city personnel, LASH has created a rent deposit fund, a winter emergency plan which will utilize Maine State Housing Authority funds to assist the homeless with housing.
