FARMINGTON – The Old South First Congregational Church, UCC, is offering the “Joy of Sharing” cookbooks for sale. The books are filled with recipes from Old South members, families and friends.

Recipe categories include appetizers and beverages, soups and salads, vegetables and side dishes, main dishes, breads and rolls, desserts, cookies and candy, this and that, and Sueli Gaewsky’s famous fundraiser Chicken Marbella.

The cookbook was compiled and edited by Kitchen Remodeling Committee members Sherry Jenckes and Brenda Scribner. Proceeds will benefit the kitchen remodeling project.

Copies are on sale for $8 at the Calico Patch, Devaney Doak and Garrett Booksellers, Forget Me Not Gift Shop, Mickey’s Hallmark and the Chocolate Shoppe, all of Farmington. Cookbooks are also available at the church office located in the Holman Parish House during office hours.

The remodeling project began after the construction of a new Christian education wing at Old South Church, which was completed in the fall of 2004. It is in the final stages, with the Remodeling Committee raising more than $53,000 to date.

The committee needs to raise approximately $6,600 more to complete the last two sections of cabinets, countertops, wall insulation and sheet rock, roof-mounted exhaust vent and wood trim.

Renovations so far include new floor, insulated walls and sheet rock, a new window, large island with stools and a triple sink, new pantry, cabinetry, cooler, upright freezer, commercial dishwasher system, commercial double-oven propane stove, ceiling lights, rolling service carts, new dishes with covered storage cart, glasses, silverware and 200-amp electrical service.

The kitchen is used to prepare free monthly community luncheons on the second Saturday from fall to spring, headed by Stan Wheeler and Rocell Marcellino. Other weekly church functions, as well as annual church and fundraising events make use of the expanded kitchen.

Organizations and families in the community have used the facilities to host meetings, a coffee house for service men and women and their families, funeral receptions and dinner functions.
