WILTON – Selectmen voted unanimously to raise hourly pay for reserve police officers from $9.76 to $11 Tuesday night.
The only person who questioned the move was Chairman Rodney Hall, who wondered if the rate should be upped to $11.25 per hour, which is what Jay pays its reserve officers. It was decided that the extra quarter per hour would be discussed again this spring prior to town meeting.
Reserve officers’ pay came up at the board’s last meeting when former police Chief Wayne Gallant and board members discussed the difficulty the town has been having finding enough officers on a regular basis.
More competitive pay was seen as being a solution in that discussion.
In a letter from Town Manager Peter Nielsen to the board, Nielsen showed the town’s former rate was much lower than in Farmington and Jay. Farmington pays its reserve officers $10.66 per hour.
Selectmen also voted to light the way between the downtown Bass Building and the High Street parking lot with three street lights, at a cost of $12 per month, per light, and to shovel and sand the walkway between the lot and the building. Randy Cousineau of property owner Cousineau properties explained Tuesday that employees at the building were running out of parking spaces, and were uncomfortable walking to the badly-lit High Street lot.
Selectmen also opened bids for fire trucks. They received bids from six different companies, two of which exceeded the $190,000 maximum for the truck and will not be considered. The board voted to give the bids to the Fire Department to review, and to discuss the issue further at its Jan. 2 meeting.
