NAPLES – An elderly Portland man died after his Subaru collided with a Kenworth truck about 9:10 a.m. Wednesday on Route 302.
Myron Friedman, 84, of Portland was pronounced dead at the scene and had to be extricated by emergency workers from the Naples Fire Department, according to the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office.
The operator of the Kenworth truck, Mark Hoener, 39, of Sabattus was not injured.
The sheriff’s office issued a release saying that the 2001 Subaru passenger vehicle driven by Friedman was traveling westbound on Route 302 in Naples when it drifted over the centerline and into the path of the Kenworth box truck driven by Hoener. The truck was traveling eastbound.
Hoener took evasive action, attempting to brake and pull into the breakdown lane but could not avoid striking the Subaru head-on, investigators said.
Accident reconstructionists from the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office are looking into the crash to determine a cause. It appears that alcohol and speed were not factors in the wreck, they said.
