WILTON – An 8-year-old Academy Hill School student was struck by a minivan Thursday morning on Main Street after she ran across the street when she saw a school bus.
The child, Xiu Juan Chen, suffered a broken upper arm and scrapes and bruises, police officer Rick Billian said.
Margaret Mitchell, 41, of Temple was heading north on the road and came around the bend and noticed kids down the road at a bus stop, Billian said.
Chen was waiting for the bus in front of her house in East Wilton, near the East Wilton Union Church and Post Office, and ran across the street when she saw a SAD 9 bus pull over on the opposite side of the road to let vehicles go by.
The right front side of the van hit the child, Billian said,
A witness said the girl was thrown about 5 feet and landed in the road, he said.
Chen was taken by ambulance to Franklin Memorial Hospital in Farmington where she was treated and released.
Maine State Police reconstructed the accident. No charges have filed in connection with it, Billian said.
The accident remains under investigation, he added.
Firefighters were called to block the road and direct traffic around the scene. Officer Terry Warren assisted Billian with witnesses.
“We feel very fortunate and happy for this girl,” Academy Hill and Cushing schools Principal Darlene Paine said.
Students from both Wilton schools were on the school bus and witnessed the crash. They were checked as they got off the bus when they arrived at Academy Hill School, Paine said. Some went to see the guidance councilor and some spoke to their parents, others were fine and didn’t want to talk to either, she said.
Paine said she called parents to tell them what their children saw.
