WINTHROP – A Monmouth man died Wednesday after his Jeep collided with a tractor-trailer in an early morning crash on Route 202.

Leon Scott Routh, 45, died at the scene from injuries suffered in the 4:15 a.m. wreck in East Winthrop, police said.

Police said Routh was driving east when his Jeep crossed the center line and collided head-on with a tractor-trailer driven by 29-year-old Tyler Abbott, of Windsor.

When Winthrop police, fire and rescue crews arrived, Routh was dead. Abbott suffered minor injuries and was treated at Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston and released.

The tractor-trailer was owned by Stiman Steele of Augusta. Maine State Police sent an officer from the Commercial Vehicle Enforcement team to assist Winthrop police with an investigation.

The Department of Environmental Protection also sent representatives to assess potential hazards from fluids spilled in the crash. Once the rescue operation was over, an investigation and cleanup began.

A stretch of Route 202 was closed to traffic until after noon on Wednesday as police and state officials remained at the scene.

By Thursday, it remained unclear what caused Routh’s vehicle to drift into oncoming traffic. Police said they do not believe alcohol was a factor. No charges have been filed.

Routh, a semiretired computer engineer technician, was engaged to be married.
