AUBURN – The Police Department’s new deputy chief is an officer who has literally done it all.
Jason Moen has been promoted to the rank of second in command after leading every division within the department in one form or another.
Formerly a lieutenant and head of criminal investigations, Moen was named to serve next to Chief Phil Crowell, who was promoted to the top position just last month.
“Jason has been a commander in all three departments,” Crowell said Friday. “He’s going to do a great job.”
The new deputy chief is an officer as comfortable on the street as he is in the realm of paperwork and computer networks. Among his achievements with the department, Moen is credited with authoring and managing state and federal grants totaling more than $1.4 million.
He is also the man behind a $1.1 million computer network that resulted in the largest multidepartment criminal database in the state.
Moen’s new position follows a classic rise through the ranks. After joining the department as a beat cop in 1995, he began work as a school resource officer and then a detective. He has commanded the department’s investigative division, support services and the patrol unit.
The recipient of Auburn’s 2006 Visionary Award, Moen created and guided the department’s first Juvenile Alcohol Response Team and the Domestic Violence Safety Team.
“He has a lot of respect among the other officers,” Crowell said.
Moen was named to the deputy chief rank, effective immediately. That move comes on the heels of Crowell’s designation of chief in November. He took over for former chief Richard Small, who retired in June.
