LEWISTON – Advocates For Children, located in the B Street Community Center, 57 Birch St., will offer several events during January.

A new monthly parent discussion group will be held from 6 to 7 p.m. starting Tuesday, Jan. 9. The group will meet on the second Tuesday of each month; the topics will vary.

The January focus will be “Nutrition.” Participants will learn tips for preparing quick and easy nutritious meals and for coping with a picky eater. The conversation group is geared toward parents with children ages 1 to 5. Child care will be provided.

Advocates For Children will offer two parenting classes in January.

“Parenting 101, Good Discipline, Good Kids” will be held at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 16. Respectful communication between parents and children is the key to good discipline. Learn why bribes, threats and grounding don’t always work.

Parents who take the class will learn how to engage cooperation, effectively set rules and expectations, how to problem solve, alternatives to punishment, accept and respect children’s feelings and manage anger.

Registration is required, and child care is provided. The class is recommended for parents with children age 4 to 12.

“Parenting 201, Keeping Peace at Home” will be held at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 30. The class will help parents understand why conflict occurs, how to prevent it and how to reach a peaceful resolution. It will help parents acquire a more peaceful, harmonious life at home.

Registration is required, and child care will be provided. The class is recommended for parents with children age 4 to 12. Call 783-3990 to register for either class.

Professionals who work with children are mandated by law to report suspected abuse or neglect of a child. They can learn what it means to be a mandated reporter, and how to recognize the signs and symptoms of abuse from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 17, at Advocates For Children.
