WASHINGTON Plt. – Marjorie Ann Smith Gordon, 69, of Washington Plantation, passed away at her home on the Weld Road in the early morning hours of Wednesday, Dec. 27.
She was born in Livermore Falls, on April 1, 1937, the eldest child of Joseph and Lura (Foss) Smith. Marge attended Wilton schools and graduated from Wilton Academy in 1955.
After graduation, she held a variety of positions including: G. H. Bass office, Wayside Grill, Vinoy Park Hotel in St. Petersburg, Fla., Rhode Island Association for the Blind, Oxford Paper Co. and the Wilton town office.
On Aug. 24, 1957, she married the love of her life, Charles Everett Gordon, whom she had met in the fourth grade. The couple settled in Washington Township, where they lived happily for 25 years and raised their beloved daughter, Pam.
In 1975, she graduated from the University of Maine at Farmington, where she earned a B.S. in elementary education. While there, she was a member of the Delta Kappa Gamma Honor Society. In 1982, she recieved a M.S. in education from the University of Southern Maine.
Most of her career was spent teaching second grade in Wilton. For two years, she functioned as the practicum supervisor at UMF. She was a member of many committees at the school and worked with friends to write an I.P. grant to create the nature trail at the Cushing School in Wilton.
Ten days after their 25th anniversary, Everett and his brother were killed when their private plane crashed in Carthage.
After her retirement in 1997, she earned her Realtor’s license and worked at Sandy River Realty for five years.
She was a collector of people. She loved her family, her students, her friends and her fellow workers in all of her jobs.
She spent many happy hours in the flower garden she had created at her home. A lifetime learner, she worked to educate herself about flowers, trees and shrubs.
She is survived by her daughter, Pam, and her granddaughter, Angela of Jay; her sister, Shirley Packard and Alex of Canaan, N.H.; her brother, Lewis Smith and Roz of Sydney; her sister-in-law, Donna Berry and Edmond of Carthage; many nieces and nephews, and all the family and friends that helped during her illness. She also leaves her dog, Michaela and two cats, Milo and Misty.
She was predeceased by her husband, Everett in 1982; her brother, Stephen and his son, Shane in 1986; her son, Terry; her parents and her mother and father-in-law, Lillian and Donald Bradeen.
Marge was very grateful to everyone who helped and transported her during the past year.
