LEWISTON – A businessman was arrested Thursday, accused of exposing his genitals and touching himself in front of children in downtown Lewiston.
David R. Fifield, 51, of Mechanic Falls turned himself in Thursday afternoon and was charged with three counts of visual sexual aggression.
Fifield operates a Mechanic Falls video store and The Settlement, a popular convenience store and diner at Crowley Road and Route 9 in Sabattus.
He was booked at the Androscoggin County Jail in Auburn. He was later released on $5,000 cash bail.
The charges against him stem from reports that in recent days, Fifield parked his truck in downtown Lewiston and exposed himself to children walking in the area.
Police said three children, each under the age of 14, reported that a man had waved them over to his truck and displayed his genitals.
One incident was reported in the area around Longley School on Birch Street. A similar event was reported on Spruce Street, close to Kennedy Park, police said.
Investigators did not provide further specifics of the allegations against Fifield.
Police were led to the businessman after they spoke with the children. He was questioned about the incidents before he turned himself in Thursday afternoon.
According to Maine law, the charge of visual sexual aggression is brought when an adult, for the purpose of sexual gratification, exposes his or her genitals to a person under the age of 14. It is a class D crime, elevated to a higher class if the victims are under 12 years old.
