In quick succession will come Masonic Hall and the drug store and several private residences. The sawmill is already provided and everyone stopped to admire the changed appearance of the building when for the first time it was lighted.

50 Years Ago, 1956

Androscoggin County’s Civil Defense organization is to receive one of the fully equipped rescue trucks from the state, according to information given the county commissioners by County CD Director Ralph B. Skinner.

Androscoggin County will complete the 1956 fiscal year with a surplus of about $45,000, according to County Treasurer Raynaldo O. Simpson. He told the County Commission at a regular meeting that at present the surplus stands at $48,962.73 but that a few outstanding bills for orders approved at the meeting will lower this total somewhat.

25 Years Ago, 1981

Maine’s cigarette smokers could be slapped with a 5-percent sales tax – which would pour an estimated $5 million more into state coffers each year – if a member of the Legislature’s Taxation Committee has his way. Rep. Edward Kane, D-So. Portland, said Monday that the Legislature should repeal the sales-tax exemption for cigarettes, which has been in effect since the state adopted a sales tax in 1951.

Although Lewiston has received 32 inches of snow in as many days, the city’s snow removal costs for 1981 will come in well under budget, thanks to the scant snowfall last January, February and March.
