LEWISTON – As a gray sky loomed and light snow blanketed the ground, family and friends of Jake Roy, 20, gathered to say goodbye Saturday to say goodbye to one of the six people killed in a car wreck last weekend.
Parked cars ran up and down both sides of Alfred Plourde Parkway as the parking lot at Pinette and Lynch Funeral Home quickly filled to capacity. Inside the funeral home, which displayed pictorial collages of Roy, flower arrangements and Roy’s snowboard, mourners crowded in to pay respect to the young man. When each and every seat was taken, people lined the walls and overflowed into the lobby.
Several spoke and shared memories of Roy, who was described as a jokester whose “smile would continue to shine through others.” They struggled to find words that could do justice to their beloved son, brother and friend.
“No matter how much you wanted to be mad at Jake, you couldn’t,” recalled a longtime friend. “He would give you that goofy smile and that was it.”
Roy, who enjoyed snowboarding, four-wheeling, basketball, and music, was not only remembered for his humorous and uplifting presence. Friends also recalled a meticulous young man who prided himself on his appearance and style.
“Jake wouldn’t leave the house unless his clothes matched,” laughed a friend. “And he always had the newest CD.”
Those who did not speak found other ways to honor Roy. Some wore homemade T-shirts decorated with “ROY – R.I.P.” and other personalized messages. Others donned white baseball caps stitched in black thread with the initials of all four young men who died in the car accident.
Roy was a passenger in a Nissan Altima that police say slid on ice early on Sunday, Dec. 24, and crossed the center line of Route 122 in Poland, crashing into a Dodge Spirit driven by Steven Walton, 27, of Poland, with passenger Laura Caron, 25, also of Poland. With Roy in the Nissan were Michael Cournoyer, 20, of Auburn, Robert Bruce, 19, of Auburn, and Matthew Manley, 18, of Lewiston. All six died as a result of the accident.
At the time of his death, Roy was working for the family business, S R General Contractors in Auburn. Previously, he had attended Lewiston High School, where he earned the respect of many friends, including Cournoyer, Bruce, and Manley.
The Rev. Antonio Amato officiated at the service. A procession to St. Peter’s Cemetery for burial followed the funeral.
