Christmas in Norway featured at library
NORWAY – “A Norwegian Christmas” was the theme for the Norway Memorial Library’s Children’s Department in December.
A display featured Norwegian language storybooks and comic books as well as books translated into English, Norwegian handicrafts and books on Norway and Norwegian cooking.
Traditional straw ornaments, Norwegian flags and pepperkaker (gingersnaps) decorated the wall. Norway, Maine, resident Brenda Melhus, whose husband is Norwegian and whose family lived in the country of Norway for several years, provided many of the items for the display.
In the craft area, children made Norwegian hjerter, woven heart-shaped baskets meant to be hung on the Christmas tree, and lenke, paper chains.
Melhus visited two story times and read Norwegian holiday stories. On St. Lucia?s Day, she brought lingonberry juice and lassekatter, or Swedish saffron buns, to share with the children, and told them about the many holiday traditions celebrated in Norway.
The Children’s Department offers a variety of programs and services for children from birth through sixth grade and their families.
