Auburn – Alphonse Gaudin, 87, died Sunday, Jan. 21, at the Hospice House with his family by his side.

He was born in Rumford on Jan. 6, 1920, the son of William H. Gaudin and Fredoline (Mary) O’Sullivan Gaudin.

He served in the Marine Corps 1st Division, 11th Marines, from 1940 to 1945, serving most of his time in the Pacific Theatre, where he fought in Guadalcanal.

He was employed by Central Maine Power after the war.

On Nov. 15, 1947, he married Doris Paradis in St. Athanasius-St. John Church in Rumford.

Al worked for Oxford Paper Co. until his retirement in 1982.

He loved to hunt, fish, hike, pick berries, cross country skiing and tending to his garden. One of his favorite pastimes was attending his grandchildren’s sporting events.

He was a member of the American Legion and the VFW.

He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Doris Gaudin; his children, Janice McKenna, and her husband, Richard, of Dixfield, Patrick Gaudin, and his wife, Gail, of West Peru and Michael Gaudin of Rumford; his grandchildren, Jason Gaudin, and wife, Barbie, of Dixfield, Nathan Gaudin, and wife, Sara, of Greene, USAF SSgt Michelle Gaudin of Ohio, Corey McKenna of San Diego, Calif., Christopher McKenna of Windham and Kate McKenna of Minot; great-grandchildren, Kayla Gaudin, Jacob Gaudin, Trevor Gaudin, Garrett Gaudin and Azrai Gaudin; a sister, Ora Dugay of Brockton, Mass.; and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his brothers Albert, Leo, Emile, Francis and Roland.
