The Oxford Hills Christian Academy high school choir performed with young friends from grade one through five during a Christmas program recently.

Oxford Hills Christian Academy stages Yule holiday program

OXFORD – The choir and the drama team at the high school campus of Oxford Hills Christian Academy teamed up and put on a double presentation of the performing arts for Christmas. Drama and music were used to showcase the Christmas story that evening at the high school campus, located at 109 Schoolhouse Road.

A packed house watched the drama team, directed by Michelle Wheeler, perform two sketches with a different twist.

The first, “Bethlehem, Pa.” put the Holy Family into the 21st century and on the road traveling from Nazareth to Bethlehem, both in Pennsylvania. Their old car struggled with the miserable weather as they hobbled into town, only to find that there was no room at any motel because of conventions. Joseph and Mary end up in a rural farmer’s barn.

The other sketch, “Don’t Be Afraid,” was set back stage at a church pageant. A man, who had been the back end of a donkey for the previous 10 years, was now playing the part of the angel. The short play chronicled his severe struggle with stage fright and ultimate triumph over it as he got caught up in the Good News of the Christmas message, and of his own part in proclaiming it.

Nikole Cary, age 5 weeks, made her first stage appearance as baby Jesus. She was flawless in her portrayal.

Then the OHCA Choir, directed by Eric J. Hanson, presented the new 2006 cantata, “Celebrate the Season.” Several readers and soloists were featured in the major musical presentation. A special moment was provided when students from grades one to five joined the high school choir for the song, “How Quietly.” The children, directed by Janice Casneau, sang the classic “Away in A Manger.”

The night also featured a pair of vocal duets by OHCA high school students and a guitar solo of “What Child is This,” played by senior class member Thom Hutchins.

Many other people, such as the high school computer class, who put the program brochure together, sound technicians, lighting technicians and elementary school teachers, assisted.
