LEWISTON – The Franco-American Heritage Center will host a gathering of La Rencontre at 11:30 a.m. Friday, Feb. 2, at the center, 46 Cedar St.

As of January, La Rencontre is being sponsored by TV5MONDE. The French television station wanted to partner with the Franco organization by sponsoring the monthly gathering, which usually has approximately 300 people in attendance.

“The group is growing all the time,” said Rita Dube, center executive director, “and people are really enjoying it.”

The goal of the event is to speak only French for two hours, and with the large population of Francos in the community, this is a good attraction for them and an opportunity for them to practice their language, Dube said.

The program will be presented by L’Ecole Francaise Du Maine of Freeport, with young students ranging in age from 5 to 8 singing, dancing and acting in French. They have appeared twice at the meetings.

The meal will be salmon pie, potatoes, vegetable and dessert. The cost is $6.50 a person, and reservations must be made ahead of time by calling Claudette at 786-6936 or the center at 783-1585. Everyone is welcome.
