NEWRY – Route 26 was closed for hours Wednesday after a logging truck toppled, blocking both lanes of traffic.

Truck driver Donald Whitney of Skowhegan was likely speeding around a sharp curve on the road when he lost control of the truck around 1 p.m., said Maine State Police Trooper Ron Turnick.

Whitney was the only one in the truck and was not injured. No other vehicles were involved.

The truck was going southbound to the Northern Maine Hauling headquarters in Skowhegan.

Towing company MT Pockets was called to get the truck off the road by pulling it upright and taking it away on a flatbed truck, Turnick said.

Some of the logs hit a power pole. Central Maine Power came to check the situation, but there was no damage, Turnick said.

At the intersection of routes 2 and 26, about 10 miles from the accident, local fire department officials had the road blocked and were only letting local traffic through.
