A very important promise that Lewiston city officials made more than a year ago to residents of downtown Lewiston seems to have been broken. They promised to restore a public park on Maple Street which supposedly had been removed for demolition work.

The city has offered no legitimate justification for violating this promise, and their secretive development plans for the property indicate dishonest intentions when the park equipment was first removed. Since its removal, more than 300 residents have demanded the park equipment be returned to its original location.

There is no denying that the park enhanced the quality of life for downtown Lewiston’s residential community. It offered a safe space for families with small children, and physical separation between the residential and commercial sections of the Southern Gateway.

In order to rebuild trust and expect community support for future development projects downtown on public land, Maple Street Park must be restored.
