PORTER – A man was arrested after attempting to steal two handguns from a Jenney Lane residence Wednesday night, police said.

Oxford County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Thomas Harriman arrested Matthew P. Colby, 21, of Cornish on charges of burglary and theft, and a misdemeanor charge of violating conditions of release.

Harriman said the victim pulled up to his house and saw an unfamiliar vehicle in the driveway, and a man running into the woods, and called police. His door had been forced open, Harriman said, and two firearms were missing.

With assistance from Maine State Police troopers, a trained dog and Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Matthew Baker, Cpl. Chancey Libby, and Deputies Christopher Davis, Joshua Wyman and Brian Landis, Colby was located in the woods, Harriman said. He confessed to taking the handguns.

The vehicle was registered to Linda Laughlin of Cornish. Harriman issued a summons to her for misdemeanor criminal trespassing.

Colby was previously convicted of breaking into the same residence to steal firearms in March 2005, Harriman said. He is on probation for that offense.
