A Rangeley man died Thursday afternoon at a Portland hospital from injuries he sustained after he lost control of his truck, hit rock ledge before he was ejected onto Route 4, then run over by an oncoming vehicle Jan. 26.

Robert J. Gardner, 24, had been listed in critical condition at Maine Medical Center since the accident occurred late at night on Jan. 26 in Sandy River Plantation.

Gardner had been driving south on Route 4 when he failed to negotiate a turn and overcorrected. It caused the truck to fishtail, leave the road, strike a rock ledge and spin before landing across the road, Franklin County Deputy Ken Charles said earlier this week.

Gardner was ejected from the truck while it was spinning and he landed on the road about 15 feet from where the truck stopped, Charles had said.

A few minutes later, Courtney Ellis of Rangeley was heading north on Route 4 and crested a rise in the road and swerved to avoid hitting the truck and ended up striking Gardner, who was lying in the road, Charles said.

A passenger in the truck, Patricia Kemp was also injured. She was taken to Franklin Memorial Hospital and released Sunday. Ellis was not injured.

“Excessive speed and alcohol are believed to have contributed to the crash” of Gardner’s truck, Charles said Monday.

“The accident remains under investigation,” sheriff’s Lt. Niles Yeaton said Friday.
