LANCASTER, N.H. (AP) – One person was killed and two injured in an apartment house fire early Sunday.

Flames broke out around 12:25 a.m., in an apartment on William Street, officials said.

One man escaped out a second floor window after being awakened by a smoke detector. The first firefighter to arrive carried a woman from the burning apartment and performed CPR. The woman was pronounced dead at the hospital.

The man who escaped and a firefighter were treated for smoke inhalation.

Officials say the fire was contained to a single apartment and was started when smoking materials ignited a sofa.

The victim’s name was being withheld as authorities worked to notify relatives.
