100 Years Ago, 1907
• The snowstorm of Tuesday was one of the most severe that has struck Lewiston this winter. About 6 inches of snow fell, but there seemed to be more owing to its drifting. Schools in Lewiston and Auburn were suspended for the day. The electric and steam cars were way behind schedule and, at one time, the electric-car service was nearly stalled.
• A dozen lobsters brought $10 in a Biddeford market the other day. In spite of the law for its protection, this toothsome crustacean is becoming scarce. Many feel that a closed season would not be at all inappropriate.
50 Years Ago, 1957
• A few mild-February days have stopped the shivers, but it will be a long time before Twin City residents forget the numbing January just past – the coldest here in 32 years.
• Doubling the 50-cent fee for motor vehicle inspections would increase effectiveness of the state’s inspection program and more adequately compensate owners of inspection stations. That’s what proponents told the legislative Transportation Committee today.
The state’s portion of the new fee would be 10 cents instead of 5 cents as at present. This would provide funds for six new state troopers especially assigned to enforce the inspection laws.
25 Years ago, 1982
NEW YORK – In an effort to find out how lifestyles and environment are related to cancer, the American Cancer Society said Wednesday it is beginning a six-year study of more than 1 million Americans – the largest such study ever done.
• The U.S. Geological Survey reports the ground water levels in the west-central part of the state were in the above-normal range for the second consecutive month. According to the USGS, the total quantity of water in usable storage in the state was 69 percent of capacity, 152 percent of that available last year, and 140 percent of the average for the date.
