FREEPORT – Russell G. Gourhan, 82, of Brunswick, died on Monday, Feb. 5.
He was born in St. Paul, Minn., on April 27, 1924, the son of George and Clara Gourhan. He volunteered to serve in the Army during World War II, and saw action in France and Germany.
While in the Army, he corresponded with a young lady – Catherine Charlotte Starck – who worked with his brother in New Jersey. After the war, he settled in New Jersey. His mother left her native St. Paul to come live with him, about a year before she died.
In 1948, he married Catherine Charlotte Starck, who remained his loving wife for 49 years until her death in 1997. They resided in Jersey City. Russ trained in drafting and machine design in the early 1950s, and eventually became a senior piping designer.
He is survived by his son, Jim Gourhan, and his daughter-in-law, Rose Gourhan, and four grandchildren, Ariel, Samuel, Gregory and Marianna Gourhan, all of Brunswick.
He was predeceased by his wife; his brother, John Gourhan from New Jersey; another brother, Rob Gourhan from St. Paul; and a sister, Sister M. Giovanni, SSND, also from St. Paul.
