LEWISTON – Members of area veterans’ organizations and the public are invited to attend a memorial service recalling the 109th anniversary of the sinking of the battleship USS. Maine.

The program will be held at noon Saturday, Feb. 10, at Trinity Episcopal Church, corner of Bates and Spruce streets. The Maine sank in Havana Harbor, Cuba, on Feb. 15, 1898.

The service is being hosted by the Longley-Dionne Post 9150, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Lewiston.

Jerry DerBoghosian, chaplain, will relate the events leading up to the explosion and sinking of the Maine. Seven members of the Maine were from Maine and two were killed, two wounded and three missing in action. Only 85 of the crew could be accounted for, with 265 missing.

Veterans attending should bring their caps and all posts’ color guards are invited. For more information, call 782-5700 or 353-7435.
