Kalle Oakes’ column Jan 31, “A little horse sense, please,” was a disappointing, insensitive use of newspaper space that could have been used to showcase the accomplishments of local sports talent. The horse industry is a significant contributor to this state’s agriculture. It is possible that the efforts made to keep Barbaro alive taught valuable leasons that can be applied to other animal injuries.

The interest shown in this animal’s progress is no less than the interest shown in the dead “beast” that received so much Sun Journal coverage last year. Lighten up a little.

There is nothing wrong with having hope for a good outcome, even if the object of that hope is an animal.

We should show concern for all God’s creatures.
