SABATTUS – George and Arline Stone of Sabattus and Tarpon Springs, Fla., recently celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary with a stroll along the shore of the Gulf of Mexico.

Married on a beautiful winter day on Jan. 18, 1947, at St. Patrick’s Chapel, their walk along the beach together marked the 60-year point as a couple, parents, grandparents, great-grandparents and snowbirds.

They are lifelong Lewiston area residents, graduates of Lewiston High School, who have been very active in the L/A community. Mr. Stone, a member of the “Greatest Generation” of World War II U.S. Army veterans of the Pacific Campaign, was a noted baseball player in his younger years, and continues to win golf tournaments in Florida. He is a past exalted leader of the Lewiston Lodge of Elks, past chairman of the St. Patrick’s Parish Council, and worked 40 years for New England Telephone Company.

Mrs. Stone is remembered by many students of the St. Patrick’s Parochial School, where she served many years as head cook of the hot lunch program. She has been active with the St. Patrick’s Rosary Sodality and is a stalwart of the local coffee club, “The Piggly Wigglies.” Both have enjoyed many years working at the St. Vincent de Paul Thrift Store.

The Stones are the parents of five children: Bob and his wife, Susan, of Lewiston, Gary and his companion, Jan, of Aurora, Colo., Brian of Littleton, Colo., and Shauna and her husband, Michael, of Kingston, Mass. Their son, Bill, passed away 17 years ago and is terribly missed and fondly remembered.

They are the grandparents to Marni Fennessy, Haley, Peter, Jonathan, Thomas, Bill and Brendan Stone, and great-grandparents to Emma, Olivia and Piper Fennessy.
