My family stands behind the govenor in his plan to cut the number of school administrative districts. It makes good sense. Even former Gov. Angus King said it’s the only way to go.
The concept has support from just about everyone, except school administrators. I can see that they are upset about losing their jobs, but many elderly and others on fixed incomes are upset about the high tax rates.
Don’t buy the argument about losing local control. It is a waste of money to pay for all that administration. It could all be handled well under Gov. John Baldacci’s plan, and much more efficiently than the present system.
And if this new plan is watered down by the Legislature, as LD 1 was, I believe there would be another vote on a Taxpayer Bill of Rights-like proposal in the near future.
If TABOR had passed, school superintendents would have passed the cuts along by cutting teachers and programs. They would not cut their own jobs in any way, I know that.
Also, higher student/teacher ratios of 17-to-1 are acceptable under Baldacci’s plan. It was 35-to-1 when I went to school, and I received a good education. It is 12-to-1 now, and school enrollment is dropping.
I know some are saying there are better plans. I heard that about Palesky’s proposal. I heard it about TABOR. To me that sounds like code words for “do nothing.”
