BRUNSWICK (AP) – A Brunswick man has been indicted for theft after allegedly stealing a sports car out of former Gov. Angus King’s driveway last spring.
Christopher Barker, 26, was indicted on Wednesday for theft by unauthorized taking or transfer and unauthorized use of a motor vehicle for two incidents in June.
In one of those cases, he is charged with taking a 1990 Mazda Miata belonging to Mary Herman, the wife of Angus King, who was governor from 1995 to 2003. The two-door car was found a day later less than a mile away.
Police linked Barker to the car through a DNA sample that was taken from a partially smoked marijuana cigarette that was recovered from the car, said Brunswick police Sgt. Martin Rinaldi. He said the DNA match was confirmed after a blood sample was taken from Barker while he was serving jail time on an unrelated charge.
Police also linked Barker to the theft of another motor vehicle in Brunswick.
In that case, police found a water bottle in the abandoned car with saliva that DNA tests matched to Barker, Rinaldi said.
