SKOWHEGAN, Maine (AP) – A Waterville man was indicted Friday on a murder charge in the shooting death of his estranged wife.

The Somerset County grand jury handed up the indictment against Richard Reynolds, 40.

He is accused of shooting Rhonda Wakefield-Reynolds, 37, on Jan. 12 at a house owned by her brother in Fairfield. The shooting happened on the same day Wakefield-Reynolds planned to file for divorce, according to court records.

The couple’s 6- and 4-year-old sons were present at the time of the shooting, and Wakefield-Reynolds died the following day at a Bangor hospital.

Reynolds has been transferred to the Maine State Prison in Warren following an evaluation at the Riverview Psychiatric Center in Augusta.

He’s scheduled to be arraigned on the murder charge March 7 in Somerset County Superior Court in Skowhegan.

If Reynolds pleads not guilty, the case will proceed toward a trial, which could begin a year or more from now, said Assistant Attorney General Andrew Benson.
