• Miss Ethel Barrymore, who appears in “Captain Jinks” at the Empire Theatre, Lewiston, tonight, arrived in this city yesterday afternoon, and went direct to the Mansion House, Poland Spring, to see her brother, Jack Barrymore, the actor, who has recently taken rooms there. Miss Barrymore will return to Lewiston this morning, where she has rooms engaged at the DeWitt House.

50 Years Ago, 1957

The Bates Manufacturing Co. announced last night it will close down all weaving operations at its Androscoggin Division in Lewiston.

Warps at the division, where about 350 textile workers currently are employed, will be run out and it is expected that all looms at the plant will be stopped on or about April 1.

In announcing the shutdown, Bates Public Relations Director H. L. Gosselin said “extremely depressed market conditions” have made it impossible for Bates, Maine’s largest cotton textile firm, to operate at the Androscoggin Division at a profit.

25 Years ago, 1982

• One year after taking office President Ronald Reagan is moving in a potentially dangerous direction. He has advised Congress that he plans to make it easier for government officials to keep information from the public on the claim that national security is involved. Such an order would reverse a 25-year trend of more openness in our federal government.

• Americans spend up to $139 million a year on unnecessary bone X-rays, money that could be saved by using a simple screening process to spot fractures, doctors at Yale report. About 22 million X-rays of arms and legs are taken each year at an average cost of $45 per exam and a total annual expense of $990 million.
