KITTERY (AP) – The second submarine in four days arrived Monday at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, officials said.
The USS Louisville, which has a crew of 20 officers and 127 enlisted sailors, will be undergoing maintenance and upgrades.
The Louisville has the distinction of being the first to fire a Tomahawk cruise missile in war, during Operation Desert Storm. It traveled 14,000 miles submerged across the Pacific and arrived in the Red Sea on Jan. 19, 1991, to launch its missiles.
Another Los Angeles-class sub arrived Friday at the shipyard.
The USS Hyman G. Rickover recently completed 22 years of service with a six-year deployment to the North Atlantic. The USS Rickover had the distinction of being the only one in the Los Angeles class to be named after a person instead of a city. It’s being inactivated.
