Society speaker

POLAND – The Poland Historical Society will meet at 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 17, at at the old schoolhouse next to the Poland Town Hall. The speaker will be Betty Winslow on “Hidden in Plain View,” the story of the underground railroad.

She will discuss the symbolism that was used in everyday life. It will include the meaning of the patterns used in quilts. The public is welcome. Refreshments will be served.

Garden club

AUBURN – The Garden Club of the Woman’s Literary Union will meet at 2 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 15, at the clubhouse, 19 Elm St. Barbara Randall will do a presentation on “Outstanding Gardens of Europe.” Guests are welcome and refreshments will be served. Phyllis Splain is in charge of hospitality.

Seniors meet

SABATTUS – Maxwell-Gill Hall was decorated with a Valentine theme for the Sabattus Senior Citizens’ Feb. 1 dinner. The menu included meat loaf, salad, brownies and ice cream.

President Stan Pelletier opened the meeting with a prayer and the pledge of allegiance. The birthday list was read, the “Birthday Song” was sung, and the sick list was read. The meeting was attended by 115 members. Beano followed.

The dinner on Thursday, March 1, will be corned beef and cabbage. To sign up for the meal, call Bob at 783-6955.

Trip coordinator Jean Doyon has a trip to Atlantic City planned for May 21 to 24 and a Foxwood trip on Tuesday, March 13. For more information, call Jean at 784-5264.

Sleigh rides

LISBON FALLS – The 14th annual “World’s Greatest” sleigh rides will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 18, on Upper Main Street (Route 125.) Cost will be adults, $3; children, $2. Proceeds will benefit the Pine Tree Society for Handicapped Children and Adults. The Farmers Draft Horse Club and the Pejepscot Sno-Chiefs Snowmobile Club will take part. After the rides, there will be homemade doughnuts, hot dogs, coffee, hot cocoa, soda and chips available.
