EUSTIS – A 51-year-old Eustis man died in an accident after his truck veered off a snow-covered section of Route 27 near Flagstaff Lake and hit a tree early Saturday. Wind had blown the snow across the road where it was an inch deep in some places.
Ronald Mongeon was traveling north on the road and was on the causeway where a set of S-turns are located when the truck left the road, struck a utility pole and then hit a large tree head-on, Franklin County sheriff Deputy Christopher Chase said Monday.
Chase was called at 1:19 a.m. Saturday to respond to the accident, he said.
Mongeon, who was not wearing a seat belt, had been at The Plaza in Stratton Friday night and was apparently heading home when the accident occurred, Chase said.
The cause remains under investigation, he said.
Chase was assisted at the scene by Deputy Heidi Gould, a U.S. Border Patrol agent, Eustis firefighters and NorthStar Emergency Medical Services.
