NORWAY – Fire ripped through a rooming house next to the Norway Memorial Library on Monday night. There were no known injuries as of 11:15 p.m., fire department dispatcher Bonnie Seames said.

The fire at 256 Main St. erupted about 9 p.m. in an addition on the right side of the large colonial home.

It appeared the building was gutted; however, it could not be confirmed because fire officials were not available for comment late Monday.

Firefighters from Norway, Paris, Oxford, Waterford, West Paris, Poland and Mechanic Falls were called to respond, a department spokesman said.

The building is owned by Madeline Pratt, who lives in a large home on the other side of the library, Norway tax assessor Jodi Keniston said.

Pratt’s daughter Vira Micklon, owner of All-Right Accounting Services at 7 Greenleaf Ave., lived in the back of the building, Keniston said. She said she didn’t remember exactly how many rooms were rented in the multistory house.

Several people, who appeared to be tenants, were in tears as they watched the flames.

An onlooker said the Salvation Army was en route to help. Seames said the Red Cross was set up at the town hall to assist fire victims.

The fire cut out power on Main Street for about 20 minutes.

Central Maine Power Co. crews responded.
