Wanted: Singers

RUMFORD – Dan Richard will host a karaoke to benefit the Maine Children’s Cancer Fund from 7 to 11 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 17, at the Rumford Elks Lodge 862 for members and guests. Children’s cancer is the largest Elks charity in Maine. Raffles will be held and wings and things will be served. A $3 donation at the door is requested.

Society speaker

RUMFORD – Dr. Robert Iles will speak on “Whitecap – the Past, the Present and the Future” at the Rumford Historical Society meeting at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 21, in the Municipal Building conference room, Congress Street.

Iles and his wife, Lida, moved to a home on the Rumford Center Road several years ago. Until his retirement, he was working as a dentist in Farmington. Their home is near the base of Whitecap Mountain.

Special service

RUMFORD – The Rumford United Methodist Church will hold a special service on Ash Wednesday at 7 p.m. Feb. 21. It will be a combined service with members of the Green Church in Mexico. The combined choir will sing “Fill My Cup, Lord.” The Rev. Kelly Harvell will conduct the service and will welcome visitors who wish to join the worship.

Beginning on Saturday, Feb. 24, there will be a Lenten study at the parsonage, 50 Franklin St., to start at 9 a.m. every Saturday during Lent. All are welcome as the group studies the book, “On the Road Again, A Faith Journey.”

Class lunch

Networking

RUMFORD – A community networking meeting, sponsored by the River Valley Healthy Communities Coalition, will be held at noon Tuesday, Feb. 20, at the Rumford Public Library. Those attending are reminded to bring their own lunch.

Joan Churchill, director of development and family services of Community Concepts, will share the findings of an Oxford County Substance Abuse Needs Assessment related to underage drinking, marijuana and illegal prescription drug use.
