AUGUSTA – Burton E. Hunt Jr., 88, formerly of 290 Merrow Road in Auburn, passed away early Tuesday, Feb. 13, at the Maine Veterans’ Home, where he had been a resident for the past three years.

He was born in Island Falls on April 20, 1918, a son of Burton E. Hunt Sr. and Eva Cookson. He was married to the former Rachel Daily, who passed away Jan. 14, 1997.

He was a veteran of the military, having served his country in the Army during World War II. While in the service, his tour of duty included time in North Africa, Sicily, Italy and Southern France until he was honorably discharged in 1945.

Burt first worked for a time at the Continental Mill and later spent several years at Peck’s Department Store before working for the postal service until his retirement in the mid-1980s. He was a member of Court Street Baptist Church and among his favorite enjoyments in his free time were hunting in his earlier years, fishing, building things, puttering around the house, hiking and enjoying the company of animals, which he loved.

He leaves a daughter, Barbara Hayden, and husband, David, of North Whitefield; a son, Elmer Hunt, and wife, Carol, of Poland; three grandchildren, Amy Hunt of Portsmouth, N.H., Lori Caron, and husband, Rick, of North Whitefield and Scott Hayden, and wife, Mary, of North Whitefield; and four great-grandchildren, Kristina and Bradley Caron and Jack and Isaac Hayden.

He was predeceased by two sisters, Mary White and Alta Ladd; and one brother, Vernon Hunt.
