LEWISTON – The Twin Cities of Lewiston and Auburn and WinterKids will host “Welcome to Winter” from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday at the Multi-Purpose Center, 145 Birch St.
WinterKids is a nonprofit organization committed to helping children develop lifelong habits of health, education and fitness through participation in outdoor winter activities.
The “Welcome to Winter” event will strive to educate and acclimate those who are not accustomed to winter weather, including immigrant families. Activities will demonstrate ways to enjoy winter, have fun and be safe during Maine’s longest season.
Greetings and announcements will occur at 1:30 p.m. with Tom Chisholm, chief meteorologist for Channel 8, serving as master of ceremonies.
Activities include: L.L. Bean facilitating snowshoeing and providing tips on how to dress for cold weather; Healthy Androscoggin providing a “Spin the Wheel” activity game; and Klondike sled races led by Boy Scout Troop 116.
In addition, a demonstration of how to safely walk on ice, “Tai Chi Balance” and Drs. Paul Davis and Christine Tremblay will be on site to discuss health benefits of being outdoors in winter and how to be safe in cold weather.
Hannaford Supermarkets will provide snacks and hot chocolate, and the Catholic Charities SEARCH Program will provide hats and mittens free on a first-come, first-served basis. Complimentary winter socks will also be available.
Children must be accompanied by an adult to attend the event, and attendees are urged to dress warm. Sponsors for the event are Healthy Maine Partnerships, L.L. Bean, Hannaford, Weight Watchers and TDBanknorth.
