PORTLAND – Sonja Lynn (Morrissette) Hodgkins, 55, of Naples, passed away Feb. 14, at Maine Medical Center, from a rare and fast moving autoimmune and lung disease.
She was born on Feb. 12, 1952, the daughter of Laurier Joseph Morrissette and Maxine Miner (Poulin) Martin. She was the third child born of 11 brothers and sisters. She often recalled memorable days of her childhood while living on a farm.
She married Robert (Bob) Maurice Hodgkins Jr. on June 20, 1970, at St. Theresa’s in Mexico. She attended night school at Mexico High School and graduated in the early 1970s. Bob and Sonja’s first child, Gloria Jean, was born on Sept. 14, 1970, and their second child, Christopher Robert, was born on Sept. 6, 1976 (Labor Day).
She graduated from Mansfield Beauty Academy in Lewiston and went on to have her own business, the Country Boutique, in the 1980s. She loved flowers and enjoyed making floral arrangements, which led her into business as a floral arranger. She was a “natural” at making superb creations. Her latest employment was at TJ Maxx in Auburn, where she held a customer service manager position.
She was a hard worker and would always go above and beyond others expectations. She was a very generous person and her first concern was always about what she could do for others. She was a lovingly devoted mother, grandmother and wife. She enjoyed spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren, Lindsey Grace Porteous, 4, and Brendon William Porteous, 1. Her grandchildren brought tremendous joy to her life. She also helped those in need with her heartwarming touch of bringing gift baskets to the needy. She also enjoyed cooking, picking flowers, collecting antiques and playing beano.
She will be dearly missed by her loved ones.
She is survived by her husband; two children and grandchildren; her mother; two sisters, Gloria Robinson and Pearl Benner; five Morrissette brothers, Willie, Archie, Joey, Jerry and Larry; 25 nieces and nephews; many great-nieces and nephews; her in-laws, Robert Sr. and Hazel Hodgkins, Wayne and Sue Hodgkins, Richard and Tina Howard, Alan Hodgkins and Richard and Valerie Allen; four nieces and nephews; and one great-niece.
She was predeceased by her father; her sister, Betsy Wood; niece, Melissa Wood; her brother, Raymond Morrissette; her niece, Lynn Robinson; and sister, Brenda Hill.
