• The nine days bazaar for the benefit of the new St. Peter’s Church of Lewiston was opened in City Hall last evening. The evening’s program was under the charge of the Ligue Catholique, Ordre St. Dominique and St. Francois.

The decorations are the handsomest ever seen at any fair ever held in City Hall. In the center of the hall is erected the Postoffice booth where people can buy souvenir postal cards and mail them from there. There is also a telephone booth which creates much amusement.

• South Turner:

W. C. Whitman was in Augusta last week. He is one of the largest breeders of fancy sheep in town, and with all other sheep breeders is interested in having better protection from dogs.

Miss Carroll Perry is sick with the grip.

Mrs. Addie Whitman and her daughter, Mrs. Elsie, are both suffering with severe colds.

50 Years Ago, 1957

Lewiston’s Police Commission declared a state of “emergency” last night and announced that citizens can look for less service from now on.

The emergency condition, reported the commission, is the result of the inability to attract the type of qualified men needed for police work.

It announced that some foot beats will be curtailed soon, along with some patrol car runs. There will be a “general lessening” of police activities.

25 Years ago, 1982

• Southwestern Maine was hit by a punching combination of snow, sleet and rain Wednesday, flooding streets, closing schools, collapsing roofs and knocking out car engines with excess water.

Both Lewiston and Auburn were plagued with clogged catch basins as the winter’s first major thaw came with over 1.2 inches of precipitation, according to measurements taken at the Union Water Power Co. gatehouse in downtown Lewiston.

• With school called off Wednesday due to the storm, Auburn has now used one more than the four “snow days” included in the 1981-82 calendar, and the School Committee is considering make-up days during April vacation.
