JAY – Barbara A. Winter, 71, a resident of Franklin Road in Jay, passed away early Sunday morning, Feb. 18, at her home following a long illness.

She was born June 12, 1935, in Shelburne Falls, Mass., the daughter of Edward R. and Helen D. (Doneilo) Hill.

She graduated from Arms Academy in Shelburne Falls, Mass. in 1953.

She was a homemaker and devoted mother of seven, whose fondest memories were of raising her children.

A self-taught artist, she was known for still life and landscape compositions and exhibited her work at various locations throughout Maine.

She enjoyed gardening, reading and spending time at her home on Stone’s Corner with her devoted husband and her cats, Spike and Miss Kitty.

She is survived and will be greatly missed by her husband of 21 years, Elvin (Al) Winter of Jay; whom she married Oct. 15, 1985; two sons, Ross Purrington and his wife, Lorelei, of Jay, and Michael Purrington and his wife, Rhonda, of Fayette; five daughters, Mary Jernigan and her husband, Billy, of Houston, Texas, Laura Edwards of Windham, Ellen Miller and her husband, John, of Winthrop, Rachel Holland and her husband, Ted, of Columbia, S.C., and Rebecca Purrington of Fayette; one stepson, Darryl Winter and his wife, Belinda, of Livermore; three stepdaughters, Sherry Chabot and her husband, Raymond, of Livermore, Trudy Leen and her husband, John, of Jay, and Tammy Capen of Livermore Falls; 14 grandchildren; 10 step-grandchildren and several step-great-grandchildren; four aunts, Christine Cusson and her husband, Roland, Julia Prouty, and Pauline Peryer, of Shelburne Falls, Mass, and Mary Zeiner of Greenfield, Mass.

The family would like to thank Androscoggin Home Care and Hospice for their extraordinary help and caring.
