FARMINGTON – With five candidates running for just one seat on the Board of Selectmen, and six positions up for grabs between selectmen and the school board, it might be hard to know who to vote for in March.
To that end, the town and the Franklin County Chamber of Commerce have planned a candidates forum for next Wednesday night so interested voters can come ask questions of the candidates.
“It’s more (candidates) than usual,” Town Manager Richard Davis said. “There seems to be a lot of interest, particularly in that two year spot – with five candidates running for that one position. That’s a bit unusual.”
“We’ve offered them an opportunity to come here next Wednesday to go over the ground rules. It’s not a debate format – just an opportunity for each candidate to make an opening statement. We’ll pass around index cards and ask the audience members to write down their questions and pass them to the moderator.” The moderator will be Roger Lambert, Davis said.
Two candidates for the four selectmen’s positions are running unopposed for spots they already have. Dennis Pike and Stephan Bunker have both served a long time on the board.
Jon Bubier and Kyle Warren are both running for former Selectman Mark Cayer’s one-year position. Cayer resigned early last fall when he moved from the area.
Five people are running for former Chairman of the Board Mary Wright’s two-year term. Wright died early this year. John Frary, Drew Hufnagle, Stanley Kuklinski, Ryan Morgan, and Bob Vallette are all running for that position.
Three people are running for two school board positions. Board members Yvette Robinson and Raymond Glass are running for re-election and Fred Smith is also running, Davis said.
“I think it’s a good opportunity for the voters to get to know the candidates, and I hope we have a good turnout,” Davis said.
The forum begins at 6:30 p.m on Wednesday at the Community Center.
