AUBURN – Shirley F. Rose, 87, a resident of School Street in Canton, passed away Monday, Feb. 19, at the Hospice House.

He was born on Sept. 2, 1919, in Canton, the son of Winfield S. and Bertha (Reed) Rose and was a graduate of Canton High School. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II in Company C, 118th Engineer Combat Battalion from 1941 to 1945.

He worked as a self-employed television repairman, was a jack-of-all-trades and during the 1970s owned and operated Bessey’s Market in Canton. He was a 55-year member of the Whitney Masonic Lodge of Canton and a member of the VFW, Frank L. Mitchell, Post 3335 of Jay. He was also a Boy Scout leader in Canton. Recently it was decided to dedicate the local ice skating rink in Canton in his name.

He is survived by a sister, Helen A. Clinton of Canton; nieces, Donna Greenleaf, Sandy Benedetto, Patty Mitchell, Penny Farnum and Regina Kelley; and a nephew, Richard Therrien.

He was predeceased by two brothers, Reginald and Clifford Rose; and two sisters, Pauline Therrien and Winnifred Rose.
