JAY – Robyn Smith, who enlisted in the Army in May 2006, is serving in Afghanistan for a year.

On Sept. 1, 2006, he completed basic training with the 2nd Battalion, 54th Infantry Division at Fort Benning, Ga.

Smith went on to Airborne School at Fort Benning and on Sept. 22, he graduated with the 1st Battalion, 507th Parachute Infantry.

Following graduation he was sent to his duty station in Fort Bragg, N.C., where he is part of the 82nd Airborne Division, 1/508th. Smith was deployed to Salerno, Afghanistan, on Jan. 23, where he will serve a one-year tour of duty.

Smith is a 2005 graduate of Jay High School. After high school he continued his education at Southern Maine Community College in South Portland, studying business for a year before enlisting in the Army. He is the son of Timothy and Tara Gallagher and Kenneth and Andrea Smith, all of Jay.
