Night with Pirates
PORTLAND – The Portland Pirates Foundation has announced that an Evening with the Pirates will be held from 6 to 10 p.m. Tuesday, March 13, at the Holiday Inn By the Bay. The event will benefit the Maine Children’s Cancer Program and the Portland Pirates Foundation.
Festivities will be marked by a Pirates theme, featuring silent and live auctions, gaming (for entertainment only), host comedian George Hamm, live buccaneer music from the Crow’s Nest, magic by the Steelegraves, a treasure chest raffle, grog and an assortment of grub. SS conference
AUGUSTA – The Maine Council for the Social Studies, in conjunction with Primary Source and the Holocaust Human Rights Center of Maine, will hold its annual conference on Wednesday, April 4, at the Augusta Civic Center.
“Why? Teaching Atrocities and Reconciliation in World History” will be a full-day conference co-sponsored by the Five College Center for East Asian Studies, the Holocaust and Human Rights Center of Maine and Primary Source.
It will provide social studies educators with the conceptual tools for understanding the roots of 20th century atrocities in Europe, Africa and East Asia.
Scholars, teacher-experts and guest speakers will give an introduction to the universal themes of identity, difference and hatred that underlie the human disasters, the historical origins of specific incidents and teaching methodologies for addressing these and other tragedies in the classroom.

Cancer grants
AUGUSTA – The Maine Cancer Foundation, which distributes funds to a variety of cancer research and education programs in the state, is seeking applicants to receive grants supporting clinical and laboratory research, professional and public education and patient support programs.
Organizations selected for research grants must be science-based and seek to study molecular basis of cancer, improve cancer prevention, detection and treatment or to analyze treatment outcomes. Proposals must be short-term and have clearly defined goals and measurable results.
