Missing are honored at Emblem meeting
FARMINGTON – The February meeting of Farmington Emblem Club 460 started with a potluck supper at 6 p.m.
During the meal, Drug Awareness Chairwoman Lois Barker asked members Gloria Nile, Connie Small and Sylvia Richards to judge posters about drug awareness made by students from the Cascade Brook School.
The winners will be invited to attend the March supper/meeting and will receive their awards for a job well done.
Prior to the start of the 7 p.m. meeting, American Legion Post 28 District Commander Charles Bennett gave a reading about MIA/POWs. He had a small table arranged with a single plate, silverware, napkin, a rose in a vase, a small lighted candle and small American Flag. An empty chair at the table honored the missing men and women who never returned home from wars.
Americanism Chairwoman Nancy Chase had asked Bennett to give the presentation. She asked volunteers to help with a flag-folding ceremony at the State House in Augusta at 8:45 a.m. Tuesday, March 6. Choir rehearsal will be held at the home of Kamilla Hall the evenings of Feb. 27 and March 5.
Literacy Chairwoman Diana Oliver volunteered at a day care center and a library. She made 147 bookmarks from used greeting cards.
During the break in the club meeting, Barker and Oliver held a fundraising Chinese auction. The table was full of items brought by members.
The sum of $64 was made for the drug awareness and literacy programs.
The pot of gold was won by Sandy Knight, the 50-50 raffle by Joe Kinsey and the mystery gift by Lois Barker.
Donations were made to the Jay Amvets toward Special Olympics, for a girl to attend Girls State, for a family who lost their home in a fire and to help with expenses for an ill child.
